25th of April, Italy like Portugal: a day of freedom.

The 25th of april is a festive day in Italy and in Portugal. This day is celebrate every year in both countries for different historical facts. In Portugal the celebration regards the commemoration of the Carnation’s Revolution, Revolução dos Cravos, in 1974, a process that started with a military coup and became a real revolution, with rebel’s soldiers and civilians taking the streets of Lisbon.

The revolution soon spred all around the country provocating the downfall of the fascist regime. The revolution starter was a song played on Radio Renascença called  Grândola vila morena by José Afonso, a song of freedom that became the simbol of the revolution. Once the radio played the song the rebel’s soldiers started to move and occupy strategic points of the city.

Text of song:                                                                                                    English translation:

Grândola, vila morena                                                                           Grândola, brown town
Terra da fraternidade                                                                                     Land of fraternity
O povo é quem mais ordena                                                                It’s the people who lead
Dentro de ti, ó cidade                                                                                        Inside you, oh city
Dentro de ti, ó cidade                                                                                        Inside you, oh city
O povo é quem mais ordena                                                                 It’s the people who lead
Terra da fraternidade                                                                                      Land of fraternity
Grândola, vila morena                                                                            Grândola, brown town
Em cada esquina um amigo                                                  On each corner there’s a friend
Em cada rosto igualdade                                                              In each face there’s equality
Grândola, vila morena                                                                             Grândola, brown town
Terra da fraternidade                                                                                       Land of fraternity
Terra da fraternidade                                                                                       Land of fraternity   Grândola, vila morena                                                                              Grândola, brown town
Em cada rosto igualdade                                                               In each face there’s equality
O povo é quem mais ordena                                                                   It’s the people who lead
À sombra duma azinheira                                                             In the shadow of a holm oak
Que já não sabia a idade                                                              Which no longer knew its age
Jurei ter por companheira                                                                   I swore as my companion Grândola a tua vontade                                                                                   Grândola, your will
Grândola a tua vontade                                                                                   Grândola, your will
Jurei ter por companheira                                                                  I swore as my companion
À sombra duma azinheira                                                             In the shadow of a holm oak
Que já não sabia a idade.                                                            Which no longer knew its age.

The comparison between Italy and Portugal is interesting because, beyond sharing the same day to celebrate the end of the fascists regimes, the two countries have a song that became representative for that historical moment. In Italy the commemoration of concerns the 25th of april 1945, day of the liberation, date in wich the most important cities where released from the fascist and nazist occupation by the rebel soldiers called Partigiani. The date is also reppresentative as a victory of the rebels in the Resistance War that started the 8th of september 1943 the day of the armistice.

The Resistance War was very hard for the population because it started during the Second World War, so it can be considered a war within a war, a civil war within a global conflict. The rebels started to organize themself in small groups that acted locally in the cities and in the countryside. The repression against the Partigiani was very strong from the fascists and nazis and killed a lot of them while most of the civil population was supporting and helping them. Most of them moved to the mountains to organize the local fights being more hidden. The most representative song of the resistance is Bella Ciao, a popular song.

Bella Ciao

Una mattina mi son svegliato,                                                        One morning I woke up,
O bella, ciao! bella, ciao! bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!                         …
Una mattina mi son svegliato                                                         One morning I woke up
E ho trovato l’invasor.                                                                       And I found the invader.

O partigiano, portami via,                                                              O partisan, take me away,
O bella, ciao! bella, ciao! bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!                         …
O partigiano, portami via,                                                              O partisan, take me away,
Che mi sento di morir.                                                                         because I feel like dying.
E se io muoio da partigiano,                                                             And if I die as a partisan
O bella, ciao! bella, ciao! bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!                         …
E se io muoio da partigiano,                                                             And if I die as a partisan
Tu mi devi seppellir.                                                                                  you have to bury me.

E seppellire lassù in montagna,                                       Bury me up there in a mountain,
O bella, ciao! bella, ciao! bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!           …
E seppellire lassù in montagna                                        Bury me up there in a mountain,
Sotto l’ombra di un bel fior.                       Underneath the shadow of a beautiful flower.

E le genti che passeranno                                                                 And people that will pass
O bella, ciao! bella, ciao! bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!                          …
E le genti che passeranno                                                                  and people that will pass
Mi diranno: Che bel fior!                             are going to tell me: What a beautiful flower!

E questo è fiore del partigiano,                                               And this is a partisan’s flower
O bella, ciao! bella, ciao! bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!                 …
E questo è fiore del partigiano,                                                and this is a partisan’s flower
È morto per la libertà!                                                                              he has died for liberty!

E questo è fiore del partigiano,                                                   and this is a partisan’s flower
È morto per la libertà!                                                                                 he has died for liberty!
